As rain falls, it collects in the container, and the depth of the collected water is then measured.

There are several types of rain gauges. More advanced are recording rain gauges, which automatically measure and record rainfall over time. These can be tipping-bucket gauges, where a small bucket fills with rain and tips over, triggering an electronic count, or weighing gauges, which measure the weight of collected precipitation. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding accuracy, maintenance, and cost.

Accurate placement of a rain gauge is crucial for obtaining reliable data. It should be located in an open area, away from obstructions like trees or buildings, which can block or divert rainfall. The height of the gauge above the ground is also standardized to minimize wind effects and splashing. Data collected from rain gauges is vital for understanding precipitation patterns, managing water resources, and assessing drought or flood conditions.
