Historically, depth was measured using a sounding line, which is a weighted rope or cable lowered until it touches the bottom. The length of the line was then measured to determine the depth. Modern techniques largely rely on sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging) technology. Echo sounders emit sound pulses towards the seabed and measure the time it takes for the echo to return. Knowing the speed of sound in water, the depth can be calculated. This allows for efficient and accurate depth profiling. Multi-beam echo sounders are capable of mapping the seabed over a wide swath, providing detailed bathymetric data.

Other methods include using pressure sensors, which measure the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water column, and remote sensing techniques, particularly for shallow waters, where light penetration allows for optical depth estimation.
