Røykdetektorer, also known as smoke detectors, are essential safety devices designed to detect the presence of smoke in the air, which is a common indicator of fire. These devices operate on the principle that smoke particles scatter light, allowing the detector to identify the presence of smoke particles in the air. There are two main types of smoke detectors: ionization and photoelectric.

Ionization smoke detectors work by measuring the change in electrical current caused by smoke particles. When smoke enters the detector, it disrupts the electrical current between two charged plates, triggering an alarm. These detectors are effective at detecting fast-burning fires but may not be as reliable for slow-burning fires.

Photoelectric smoke detectors, on the other hand, use a light source and a photoelectric sensor to detect smoke. When smoke enters the detector, it scatters the light, reducing the amount of light that reaches the sensor. This change in light intensity triggers the alarm. Photoelectric detectors are generally more sensitive to slow-burning fires and are often used in residential settings.

Both types of smoke detectors are designed to provide early warning of a fire, giving occupants time to evacuate safely. It is recommended to install smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Regular testing and maintenance of smoke detectors are also crucial to ensure they function correctly when needed.
