Røntgenutstyr, also known as X-ray equipment, refers to the medical devices used to produce and detect X-rays for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The core components typically include an X-ray tube, which generates the X-rays, and a detector, which captures the resulting image. The X-ray tube consists of a cathode that emits electrons when heated, and an anode that accelerates these electrons. When the electrons strike the anode, they produce X-rays.

The intensity and energy of the X-rays can be controlled by adjusting the voltage applied to the tube and the current flowing through it. Different types of detectors are available, ranging from traditional film-based systems to modern digital detectors that offer immediate image display and easier manipulation. These digital systems can be computed radiography (CR) or direct radiography (DR).

Røntgenutstyr is fundamental in various medical specialties. In radiology, it is used for imaging bones, lungs, and other internal structures to diagnose conditions like fractures, pneumonia, and certain types of cancer. Dental X-rays utilize specialized equipment to visualize teeth and jawbones. Fluoroscopy, a continuous X-ray imaging technique, allows for real-time visualization of internal organs and the flow of contrast agents. Therapeutic applications, though less common today, historically involved using X-rays for treating certain cancers. Safety protocols, including shielding and dose management, are critical in the operation of all røntgenutstyr to minimize radiation exposure to patients and healthcare professionals.
