Rétégképzés, also known as stratified rock formation, is a geological process that involves the accumulation of layers of sediment, volcanic ash, or other materials over time. This process is fundamental to the creation of sedimentary rocks, which make up a significant portion of the Earth's crust. The layers, or strata, can vary in thickness and composition, reflecting changes in the environment over time, such as shifts in sea level, climate, or the presence of different types of sediment sources.

The formation of stratified rocks typically occurs in the following steps:

1. Deposition: Sediments, such as sand, silt, or clay, are deposited in a body of water, like an ocean or lake, or on land. These sediments can also include organic materials like plant debris or the remains of marine organisms.

2. Compaction: Over time, the weight of the overlying sediments compresses the lower layers, reducing the pore space and increasing the density of the rock. This process, known as lithification, also involves the cementation of the sediments by minerals like quartz or calcite.

3. Diagenesis: This is the chemical and physical alteration of sediments after their initial deposition, but before they are lithified into rock. Diagenetic processes can include the dissolution of minerals, the precipitation of new minerals, and the rearrangement of existing minerals.

Stratified rocks provide valuable information about the Earth's history, as each layer represents a snapshot of the environment at a specific time. By studying the composition and sequence of these layers, geologists can reconstruct past environments, track changes in climate and sea level, and understand the processes that have shaped the Earth's surface over millions of years.
