ráðuneytinu

Ráðuneytið, or the ministry, is a government department in Iceland responsible for a defined policy area within the executive branch. Each ráðuneyti is led by a minister (ráðherra), who serves in the cabinet and is accountable to Alþingi, the parliament. The ministry develops policy, drafts legislation, and administers public programs within its remit, and it supervises public agencies and services under its control.

Ministries are staffed by civil servants and advisers who prepare policy proposals, regulations, and implementation measures, and who coordinate with other government bodies. They prepare annual budgets and policy plans, which must be approved by Alþingi. Ministers answer to the parliament and may be replaced in changes of government.

The term ráðuneytið is Icelandic for “the ministry.” It inflects for case and number; the definite singular is ráðuneytið, and the dative singular is ráðuneytinu. The concept has been a central feature of Iceland’s modern constitutional government, with distinct ministries established in the 20th century to administer different policy areas. In practice, the ministries operate as part of the government’s executive branch, while Parliament (Alþingi) exercises legislative oversight and budgetary authority.
