Ruiskutussyöttö, also known as fuel injection, is a fuel delivery system for internal combustion engines. Instead of a carburetor mixing fuel and air before it enters the cylinder, fuel injection systems spray a precise amount of fuel directly into the intake manifold or the combustion chamber itself. This allows for more accurate control over the air-fuel mixture, leading to improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and better engine performance.

There are several types of fuel injection systems. Port fuel injection, also known as indirect injection, delivers fuel to the intake manifold just before the intake valve. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Diesel engines have always utilized direct injection, where fuel is injected under high pressure directly into the cylinder. The electronic control unit (ECU) plays a crucial role in modern fuel injection systems, monitoring various engine parameters like engine speed, throttle position, and oxygen sensor readings to calculate and deliver the optimal amount of fuel at the right time. This precise control is a significant advancement over older carburetor technology, which relied on mechanical principles to regulate fuel flow. The transition to fuel injection has been a key factor in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations and consumer demands for better mileage.
