The word is derived from the Polish rozmywać, meaning to blur or to diffuse, with the agentive suffix -ajce, implying a thing that performs the action.

In digital imaging, rozmywajce refer to algorithms and filters that create blur by spreading light across neighboring samples. Typical examples are Gaussian blur, box blur, and diffusion-based blurs, which vary in how they weight surrounding pixels. Physically, diffusion and soft-focus filters in lenses or diffusion screens in front of projectors act as rozmywajce by spreading light before it reaches the recording medium or eye.

In film and photography, rozmywajce contribute to aesthetics by softening texture, masking noise, or conveying dreamlike or atmospheric effects.
