This process is crucial for extending the lifespan and maintaining the structural integrity of many products and infrastructures.

Common methods of rust prevention include the application of protective coatings. These can be organic, such as paints and lacquers, or inorganic, like metallic platings. Galvanization, a process where a layer of zinc is applied to steel or iron, is a widely used technique. The zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, corroding preferentially to the iron.
