Rooting hormones are substances that promote the development of roots in plants. They are often used in horticulture and agriculture to facilitate vegetative propagation, a process where new plants are grown from cuttings or other plant parts.

The primary active components in rooting hormones are typically plant hormones, specifically auxins. Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) are the most common synthetic auxins used in commercial rooting products. Natural auxins, such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), also exist but are less stable and therefore less frequently used in formulations.

These hormones work by influencing cell division and elongation in the plant tissue where they are applied. When a cutting is treated with a rooting hormone and then placed in a suitable growing medium, the auxins stimulate the formation of adventitious roots, which are roots that arise from non-root tissue, such as a stem or leaf.

Rooting hormones come in various forms, including powders, gels, and liquids. Powders are often dusted onto the cut end of a stem cutting. Gels and liquids are typically used as dips for the cuttings. The concentration of the hormone and the duration of application can vary depending on the plant species and the type of cutting. Overuse can sometimes inhibit root formation or cause abnormal growth.

While rooting hormones can significantly increase the success rate of propagating plants from cuttings, they are not always necessary. Some plant species readily root without any artificial assistance. However, for many ornamental plants and woody species, rooting hormones are a valuable tool for gardeners and commercial growers.
