Rodnikowy is the Polish adjective used to describe processes, reactions, and materials that involve free radicals or are initiated by them. The term derives from rodnik, meaning a free radical in chemistry. In Polish scientific usage, it appears in phrases such as mechanizm rodnikowy, inicjacja rodnikowa, polimeryzacja rodnikowa and reakcje rodnikowe, all referring to radical-based chemistry. The concept contrasts with non-radical or ionic reaction pathways.

In chemistry, a rodnikowy mechanism is characterized by three stages. Initiation involves formation of radicals from initiators such as peroxides or azo compounds, or by photochemical or thermal means (fotoinicjacja, termiczna inicjacja). Propagation comprises successive steps in which a radical adds to substrates (for example, an unsaturated bond) to generate new radicals that continue the chain. Termination occurs when two radicals combine or disproportionate, ending the chain process. The overall rate and outcome depend on factors like oxygen presence, solvent, temperature, and inhibitor content.

Applications of rodnikowy chemistry are widespread, most notably in polimeryzacja rodnikowa (free-radical polymerization). This approach enables the production of common polymers such as polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride. Key advantages include tolerance for a broad range of monomers and relatively simple equipment requirements, while limitations include sensitivity to oxygen and the need to manage chain transfer and inhibitors. In practice, radical processes are used in coatings, resins, and various consumer plastics, as well as in organic synthesis where radical pathways offer access to reactive intermediates.
