Ristikkäistutkimus, also known as cross-sectional study, is a type of observational research that analyzes data from a population, or a representative subset, at a specific point in time. It is often used to determine the prevalence of a condition or characteristic within that population. In essence, it provides a snapshot of a population's health or other attributes at a single moment.

These studies are relatively quick and cost-effective to conduct because they involve collecting data only once. They are useful for identifying associations between variables, such as the relationship between smoking and lung cancer, or the prevalence of diabetes in a particular age group. However, ristikkäistutkimukset cannot establish a cause-and-effect relationship. Because all variables are measured simultaneously, it is impossible to determine which came first – the exposure or the outcome.

The primary applications of ristikkäistutkimus include describing the characteristics of a population, estimating the incidence of diseases or risk factors, and generating hypotheses for further research. They are particularly valuable in public health for understanding the current state of a population's health and for guiding the development of health interventions. Despite their limitations in establishing causality, their ability to provide a broad overview makes them a fundamental tool in epidemiological and social research.
