Risikonøytralitet, often translated as risk neutrality, is a concept used in finance and economics to describe an investor's or decision-maker's attitude towards risk. A risikonøytral individual is indifferent between a certain outcome and a risky outcome with the same expected value. This means that their utility for money is a linear function of the amount of money.

In practical terms, a risikonøytral person will not pay extra to avoid risk, nor will they demand extra compensation for taking on risk. They solely base their decisions on the expected monetary outcome. For instance, if presented with a choice between receiving $100 for sure or a gamble with a 50% chance of winning $200 and a 50% chance of winning $0 (both having an expected value of $100), a risikonøytral person would consider both options equally attractive.

The concept of risikonøytralitet is a theoretical idealization. Most individuals exhibit either risk aversion, where they prefer a certain outcome to a gamble with the same expected value, or risk seeking, where they prefer a gamble to a certain outcome with the same expected value. However, risikonøytralitet serves as a useful benchmark in financial modeling and decision theory, particularly when analyzing markets where many participants are assumed to act in a way that approximates this indifference. It simplifies calculations and provides a baseline against which more complex behaviors can be compared.
