ringkonfiguration

Ringkonfiguration, also known as ring topology, is a network configuration where devices are connected in a closed loop or ring. Each device in the ring is connected to exactly two other devices, one on either side. Data travels around the ring in one direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise, passing through each device until it reaches its destination.

In a ring network, data is transmitted as packets. When a device sends data, it is sent to the next device in the ring. If that device is not the intended recipient, it forwards the packet to the next device. This process continues until the packet reaches its destination. Some ring networks use a token-passing mechanism to control access to the network. A special frame called a token circulates around the ring, and only the device holding the token is allowed to transmit data.

Ring topologies were more common in older Local Area Networks (LANs), particularly with technologies like Token Ring. While less prevalent in modern networks compared to star or mesh topologies, understanding ringkonfiguration is important for historical context and for situations where it might still be implemented. The advantages of a ring topology include its orderly data flow and potential for high performance under heavy load when token passing is used. However, a single device failure or a break in the cable can disrupt the entire network, which is a significant disadvantage.
