A riktningsfält, or direction field in English, is a graphical tool used to visualize the solutions to a first-order ordinary differential equation. It consists of a collection of short line segments plotted on the xy-plane. Each line segment is placed at a specific point (x, y) and its slope is equal to the value of the derivative dy/dx at that point. The differential equation dy/dx = f(x, y) defines the slope of the solution curves at every point in the plane where f(x, y) is defined.

By examining the direction field, one can gain an understanding of the qualitative behavior of the solutions without explicitly solving the differential equation. Solution curves are tangent to the line segments at each point they pass through. This means that a solution curve will follow the direction indicated by the line segments. Observing the patterns formed by these segments can reveal information about the existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as their general shape, such as whether they tend towards an equilibrium point, diverge to infinity, or exhibit oscillatory behavior. Direction fields are particularly useful for visualizing solutions in regions where analytical solutions are difficult or impossible to find.
