A riflescope is an optical sighting device that attaches to a firearm, typically a rifle, to aid in aiming. It magnifies the target and provides a reticle, or crosshair, that the shooter aligns with the target for accurate shot placement. Riflescopes are essential tools for hunting, sport shooting, and military applications, significantly improving accuracy at longer ranges.

The primary components of a riflescope include the objective lens, which gathers light and forms an initial image; the erector system, which inverts and magnifies the image; and the eyepiece, through which the shooter views the magnified image and reticle. The magnification of a riflescope is indicated by numbers, such as 3-9x, meaning it can zoom from 3 times to 9 times magnification. The objective lens diameter, also measured in millimeters (e.g., 40mm), affects light-gathering capability and thus the brightness of the image.

Riflescopes also feature adjustment turrets, usually for windage (horizontal adjustment) and elevation (vertical adjustment), allowing the shooter to zero the scope to the specific firearm and ammunition. The reticle itself can come in various designs, from simple crosshairs to more complex illuminated patterns with range-finding capabilities. The quality of a riflescope is determined by its optical clarity, durability, and the precision of its adjustments.
