Rhotacized is a linguistic term describing a sound or segment that has acquired a rhotic, or “r-like,” quality. In phonology, rhotacization can refer to two related phenomena: rhotacized consonants, where a consonant becomes a rhotic segment such as [ɹ], and rhotacized vowels, where a vowel’s nucleus is colored by an r-like quality, producing rhotic vowels such as [ɚ] or [ɝ].

Consonantal rhotacization occurs when a sound historically or synchronically shifts toward the rhotic approximant. This can be part of a broader series of sound changes in a language or dialect, sometimes replacing an earlier consonant or altering the articulation in a way that yields a rhotic resonance.

Vowel rhotacization, or rhotacized vowels, is common in many rhotic dialects of languages like English. In these systems, vowels before or around an /ɹ/ become “r-colored,” yielding a distinct rhotic vowel quality rather than a plain vowel plus a separate /r/ consonant. Examples often cited include the American English vowels in words such as car, bird, or careful, where the vowel nucleus is effectively colored by rhoticity.

Rhotacized as a descriptor is also used in historical linguistics to discuss processes collectively known as rhotacism, which describe changes in various languages that introduce rhotic features, either in consonants, vowels, or both. The term thus covers a range of phonetic and phonological outcomes centered on rhoticity.
