Rhodium on carbon, often abbreviated as Rh/C, is a heterogeneous catalyst widely used in organic synthesis. It consists of rhodium metal nanoparticles dispersed on a high-surface-area carbon support. The carbon support provides a stable and inert platform, increasing the surface area of the active rhodium species, thereby enhancing catalytic activity and selectivity.

This catalyst is particularly effective for hydrogenation reactions. It is employed in the reduction of various functional groups, including alkenes, alkynes, nitro groups, and carbonyl compounds. Rh/C can also catalyze dehalogenation reactions, where halogen atoms are removed from organic molecules. Its applications extend to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and materials.

The preparation of Rh/C typically involves impregnating a carbon material with a rhodium salt, followed by a reduction step to form metallic rhodium nanoparticles. The particle size and distribution of rhodium on the carbon support can be controlled through variations in the preparation method, influencing the catalyst's performance. Rh/C catalysts are generally stable under reaction conditions but can be sensitive to poisoning by sulfur compounds and other impurities. After use, they can often be recovered and reused, though their activity may decrease over time.
