Returledningen, or the return line, is a pipe in a fluid system that carries the fluid back to its source after it has conveyed heat, cooling, or another form of work. In most systems it runs opposite to the supply line (försörjningsledningen) and helps complete the closed-loop circuit necessary for continuous operation.

In heating systems, such as hydronic radiators or radiant floors, the returledningen returns cooler water from the rooms back to the boiler or heat source to be reheated. In district heating networks the return line transports cooled water from consumer buildings back to the production plant where it is reheated. In cooling and process systems, the return line carries the cooled or processed fluid back to the chiller, condenser, or reservoir for recirculation.

Design and operation considerations for returledningen include correct sizing to maintain sufficient flow velocity and minimize pressure loss, material selection compatible with the fluid and operating temperature, and proper insulation to reduce heat loss or gains. Pumps, valves, and fittings must be chosen to ensure reliable circulation and system balance. In some installations, backflow prevention devices prevent contamination of the return path, and air vents or dirt catches aid in maintenance.

Maintenance and safety awareness are important for returledningen. Regular inspection for leaks, corrosion, or sediment buildup helps prevent efficiency losses and equipment damage. Proper commissioning and periodic balancing ensure that the return line supports stable temperatures and pressures, contributing to overall system performance and energy efficiency.
