Policies such as price controls, subsidies, or excessive regulation can distort market signals and lead producers and consumers to make decisions that do not reflect true scarcity or demand. For example, setting a price ceiling below the market equilibrium can lead to shortages, as producers are unwilling to supply the quantity demanded at that price.

Information asymmetry, where one party in a transaction has more or better information than the other, can also result in inefficient resource allocation. This can occur in markets for used cars (where sellers know more about the car's condition than buyers) or in financial markets. The lack of perfect information can lead to adverse selection and moral hazard, further distorting allocation. Addressing resource misallocation often involves analyzing the underlying causes and considering interventions that improve market functioning or provide necessary public goods.
