Respiration, also known as breathing, is a fundamental biological process that involves the exchange of gases between an organism and its environment. In humans and other mammals, respiration is primarily achieved through the lungs, which are the primary organs responsible for this process. The process begins with the inhalation of air, which is rich in oxygen, into the lungs. The air then passes through the trachea and bronchi, eventually reaching the alveoli, tiny air sacs where the exchange of gases occurs.

During inhalation, the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle located below the lungs, contracts, causing the lungs to expand and fill with air. Simultaneously, the intercostal muscles between the ribs contract, further expanding the chest cavity. This expansion creates a vacuum that draws air into the lungs. In contrast, exhalation occurs when the diaphragm relaxes, and the intercostal muscles relax as well, causing the lungs to deflate and expel air from the body.

The oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream, where it binds to hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. This oxygenated blood is then transported to various parts of the body, providing the necessary oxygen for cellular respiration. Conversely, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses from the bloodstream into the alveoli and is expelled during exhalation.

Respiration is a continuous process that occurs throughout an organism's life, ensuring the supply of oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide. It is regulated by the respiratory center in the brain, which controls the rate and depth of breathing in response to changes in blood oxygen levels and carbon dioxide concentrations. Proper respiration is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and supporting the body's metabolic processes.
