In lawns, resowing repairs thin or bare patches caused by wear, drought, disease, or pest damage. In field crops, it can accompany planting cycles after frost, flooding, or poor emergence. In forestry and restoration, reseeding is used to establish vegetation on degraded ground, often after disturbance such as mining or erosion.

Determining timing and method depends on crop type and climate. Resowing is typically done when soil moisture is adequate but before excessive weed growth; for grasses, early spring or late summer can be common. Methods include broadcasting seed across the area, hydroseeding, or using a no-till drill. Seed rates are usually increased relative to initial seeding to compensate for losses and uneven germination. Soil preparation may include light tillage, raking to remove debris, and ensuring good seed-to-soil contact. Weed control and sometimes seed coatings or inoculants are used to improve establishment.
