Residuaalkatkestajad, also known as residual current devices (RCDs) or ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), are safety devices designed to protect people from electric shock. They work by monitoring the electrical current flowing through a circuit. In a healthy circuit, the current flowing out on the live wire should be equal to the current returning on the neutral wire.

If an RCD detects an imbalance between these currents, it indicates that some current is leaking out of the intended path, possibly through a person or a faulty appliance. This leakage could be dangerous. When such an imbalance is detected, the RCD rapidly interrupts the flow of electricity, disconnecting the power to the affected circuit. This rapid disconnection significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or electrocution.
