Resessiivisenä is a Finnish term relating to genetics. It describes a gene or allele that only expresses its characteristic when it is present in a homozygous state. This means that for a recessive trait to be observable, an individual must inherit two copies of the recessive allele, one from each parent. If an individual inherits one dominant allele and one recessive allele, the dominant allele's trait will be expressed, and the recessive trait will be masked.

The concept of recessiveness is fundamental to understanding Mendelian inheritance. Gregor Mendel's experiments with pea plants helped establish this principle.
