Reperfúze refers to the restoration of blood flow to an organ or tissue that has been deprived of oxygen due to a blockage or obstruction. This blockage, often caused by a blood clot or atherosclerosis, leads to ischemia, a condition where cells begin to die from lack of oxygen and nutrients. Reperfusion occurs when the obstruction is removed, allowing blood to flow back into the affected area.

While reperfusion is crucial for saving ischemic tissue and preventing irreversible damage, it can also paradoxically cause further injury. This phenomenon is known as reperfusion injury. It arises from a complex cascade of events that occur when oxygenated blood returns to previously hypoxic tissues. However, strategies to mitigate reperfusion injury are also an active area of research.
