Reperfusion refers to the restoration of blood flow to an organ or tissue that has been previously deprived of it. This can occur spontaneously or be intentionally induced as part of a medical treatment. Ischemia, the condition of reduced blood flow, can lead to cell damage and death if not resolved promptly. Reperfusion aims to reverse this damage by reintroducing oxygen and nutrients to the affected area.

Researchers are actively investigating ways to mitigate reperfusion injury through various pharmacological and therapeutic strategies to maximize the benefits of restoring blood flow.
