Rendszáma, or license plate number, is the identifier assigned to a motor vehicle registered in Hungary. It is the public mark by which a vehicle can be recognized by authorities and other road users. The plate is mounted on the front and rear of most vehicles and, together with the vehicle’s registration documents, ties the vehicle to its owner and its legal status.

Issuance and format: The rendszáma is issued by the competent Hungarian authority upon registration of a vehicle and is recorded in the national vehicle registry. It remains the vehicle’s identifier during its registration period. In the European Union, Hungarian plates display a blue band on the left with the country code “H.” The alphanumeric sequence commonly consists of three letters followed by three digits (for example, ABC-123). Formats have varied over time and there are distinct plates for certain vehicle types, such as diplomatic or government vehicles.

Use and significance: The rendszáma is essential for traffic enforcement, toll collection, parking, and accident reporting. It is stored in vehicle registration records, insurance policies, and police databases. In case of ownership changes, registration details are updated accordingly, and the plate number continues to serve as the vehicle’s official identifier within the registration system.
