Rektoszkopia is a medical procedure used to examine the rectum and the lower part of the colon. It involves the insertion of a rectoscope, a short, rigid or flexible tube equipped with a light source and a lens, into the anus. The rectoscope allows the physician to visualize the lining of the rectum and detect any abnormalities such as inflammation, polyps, tumors, or sources of bleeding.

The procedure is typically performed in a doctor's office or clinic. Before the examination, the patient may be asked to undergo bowel preparation, which usually involves enemas to clear the rectum. During the rectoscopy, the patient lies on their side with their knees drawn up to their chest or is positioned in a kneeling stance. The physician gently inserts the lubricated rectoscope into the anus and advances it a few inches into the rectum. Air may be introduced to inflate the rectum slightly, improving visibility. The physician carefully examines the rectal lining as the instrument is slowly withdrawn.

Rektoszkopia is a relatively quick and usually painless procedure, though some discomfort or a sensation of pressure may be experienced. It is often used for diagnosing conditions like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, proctitis, and colorectal cancer. Biopsies can be taken during the procedure if suspicious tissue is found. The findings from a rectoszkopia help in diagnosis and guide further treatment decisions.
