Reinfecções, also known as reinfections, occur when an individual becomes infected with a pathogen after having previously cleared an infection by the same pathogen. This can happen for several reasons. Immunity developed from a prior infection might wane over time, leaving the individual susceptible again. In some cases, the pathogen itself might evolve, developing new strains or variants that can evade the immune memory of previous exposure. This is commonly observed with viruses like influenza and coronaviruses, which are known for their rapid mutation rates.

Another factor contributing to reinfections is incomplete eradication of the pathogen during the initial illness. If the immune system does not fully clear the pathogen, a small number might remain dormant or at a low level, leading to a resurgence of infection. Certain conditions, such as a weakened immune system due to illness, age, or immunosuppressive treatments, can also increase the likelihood of reinfection by making it harder for the body to establish and maintain lasting immunity.
