regiorandom

Regiorandom is a concept used in statistics, computer science, and geographic data analysis to describe random processes that incorporate explicit regional structure. The core idea is to generate random values that vary by region and, in many formulations, exhibit dependence between neighboring regions.

Definition: Let a spatial domain S be partitioned into regions R1, R2, ..., Rk. A regiorandom model assigns to each region i a random variable X_i with marginal distribution F_i, and a joint distribution that encodes correlations between regions. In a Gaussian regiorandom model, the vector (X_1,...,X_k) follows a multivariate normal distribution with mean vector mu and covariance matrix Sigma, where mu_i is the regional mean and Sigma encodes both intra-region variability and inter-region dependencies. Alternatively, conditional autoregressive (CAR) or simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) formulations specify X_i conditional on neighboring regions: X_i = mu_i + sum_{j ~ i} w_{ij}(X_j - mu_j) + epsilon_i, with epsilon_i ~ N(0, tau_i^2).

Construction and variants: Regiorandom fields can be built by combining region-specific base distributions with a spatial smoothness prior, or by sampling region-level parameters from higher-level distributions in hierarchical regiorandom models. The adjacency structure between regions controls the strength and reach of the dependence.

Applications: They appear in spatial statistics for data augmentation and simulation, climate and environmental modeling, epidemiology for region-specific outbreak patterns, urban planning, and procedural content generation in games where regional diversity is desired.

Limitations: Defining region boundaries and adjacency can strongly affect results; parameter estimation may be challenging with sparse data; nonstationarity across regions may require more complex models.
