Refraktiokyvyn, often translated as refractive power or dioptric power, is a measure of how strongly a lens or optical system converges or diverges light. It is inversely proportional to the focal length of the lens. A lens with a shorter focal length will have a higher refractive power, meaning it bends light more sharply. The unit of measurement for refractive power is the diopter (D). One diopter is defined as the refractive power of a lens with a focal length of one meter.

The concept of refractive power is fundamental in optics, particularly in ophthalmology and optometry. It is used to quantify the focusing ability of the eye and to prescribe corrective lenses for vision problems like myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). For example, a myopic eye has too much refractive power, causing light to focus in front of the retina. Corrective lenses for myopia are concave (diverging) and have a negative dioptric value, reducing the overall refractive power of the eye. Conversely, a hyperopic eye has insufficient refractive power, and corrective lenses are convex (converging) with a positive dioptric value, increasing the refractive power.

In optical instruments like telescopes and microscopes, the combined refractive power of multiple lenses determines the overall magnification and image quality. Understanding refractive power allows optical designers to manipulate light paths and create desired optical effects.
