Reformulators are scientists and product developers who specialize in reformulating existing products, particularly drugs, to address limitations of the original formulation and improve use. In the pharmaceutical industry, reformulation refers to creating a new dosage form, delivery system, or composition for an active ingredient that already exists on the market, with goals such as higher bioavailability, improved tolerability, longer shelf life, or enhanced patient adherence.

Common reformulation strategies include altering the dosage form (for example, from immediate-release tablets to extended-release, suspensions, transdermal patches, or inhalable forms); modifying excipients and physico-chemical properties; creating different salt forms or prodrugs; or enabling alternative routes of administration. Advanced approaches employ technologies such as solid dispersions, lipid-based systems, nanoparticles, crystalline engineering, or nanoemulsions to modify absorption and distribution.

Reformulators work within multidisciplinary teams that may include formulation scientists, pharmacologists, process engineers, quality assurance specialists, and regulatory affairs professionals. The work typically spans literature review, preformulation studies, formulation development, stability testing, scale-up, and, when needed, clinical or bridging studies to demonstrate comparable or superior performance relative to the original product.

Regulatory and market considerations are central. Reformulated products require regulatory clearance demonstrating safety and efficacy of the new formulation, and may be subject to patent and exclusivity considerations intended to protect or extend market life. Reformulation projects balance technical feasibility, cost, patient benefit, and potential impact on public health.
