Recomendável is an adjective in Portuguese that designates something that should be done or that is advisable, worthy of being recommended. It expresses advisability or suitability in guidelines, instructions, and recommendations.

The term derives from the verb recomendar and the suffix -ável, which signals possibility or capacity, yielding the sense of “capable of being recommended.” The related noun is recomendação; related adjectives include aconselhável, conveniente, and oportuno.

Used in impersonal constructions such as “É recomendável…” to indicate a general recommendation. Example: “É recomendável manter o software atualizado.” It can also follow a subordinate clause with the subjunctive: “É recomendável que você leia as instruções” or “Não é recomendável que se ignore os riscos.” In formal writing, the passive voice “Recomenda-se” is also common.

Both Brazilian and European Portuguese use recomendável widely, particularly in health, safety, education, and legal contexts. In everyday speech, aconselhável is a frequent synonym; depending on context, conveniente or útil may be more natural.
