The realgasmodellen, or real gas model, is a thermodynamic concept used to describe the behavior of gases that deviate from ideal gas behavior. Ideal gases are theoretical constructs that follow simple mathematical relationships, such as the ideal gas law, PV=nRT. However, real gases, under certain conditions of high pressure or low temperature, exhibit properties that are not accurately predicted by this ideal model.

The deviations arise from two primary factors neglected in the ideal gas model: the finite volume of gas molecules and the intermolecular forces between them. Real gas molecules do occupy space, and this volume becomes significant when the molecules are compressed into a smaller container volume. Intermolecular forces, such as van der Waals forces, are attractive at larger distances and repulsive at very short distances. These forces influence the pressure exerted by the gas.

Various equations of state have been developed to better represent real gas behavior. The most well-known is the van der Waals equation, which modifies the ideal gas law by introducing correction terms for molecular volume and intermolecular forces. Other real gas models include the Redlich-Kwong equation and the Peng-Robinson equation, which offer different levels of accuracy and complexity for predicting gas properties like compressibility, fugacity, and phase equilibria. Understanding these real gas models is crucial in chemical engineering and other fields where precise gas behavior is important for process design and analysis.
