Rationalists are philosophers who contend that reason is the primary source of knowledge, capable of yielding substantive truths independently of sensory experience. They emphasize the role of a priori reasoning, deduction, and often innate ideas or principles that can be known without observation of the external world.

Historically, rationalism coalesced in early modern Europe as a rival to empiricism. Its most influential figures are René Descartes, Baruch Spinoza, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, often grouped as continental rationalists. They argued that certain knowledge—especially in mathematics, logic, and metaphysics—can be gained through clear and distinct ideas and rational reflection, with senses providing only imperfect information. This tradition was later challenged by empiricists such as John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume, who emphasized experience as the source of knowledge.

Core doctrines associated with rationalism include the existence of a priori knowledge, the possibility of necessary truths, and the use of deduction to derive conclusions from self-evident starting points. Descartes sought certain knowledge via methodological doubt and the cogito; Spinoza developed a geometrical, systematized account of knowledge; Leibniz introduced concepts such as necessary truths and the principle of sufficient reason, and explored the idea of pre-established harmony among mind and world.

Impact and critique have shaped the history of philosophy. Rationalist arguments influenced science, mathematics, and metaphysics, while criticisms from empiricism and later Kantian synthesis highlighted limits to reason alone. Today, rationalist themes persist in discussions of a priori knowledge, mathematical truth, and the foundational role of reason in human understanding.
