Rasterikuvaksi is a Finnish term that translates to "raster image" in English. It refers to a type of digital image composed of a grid of pixels, where each pixel is assigned a specific color value. This contrasts with vector graphics, which are defined by mathematical equations and can be scaled infinitely without losing quality.

Raster images are created using pixel-based editors, such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP, or they can be generated by digital cameras, scanners, or screen captures. Common file formats for raster images include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF. The resolution of a raster image, measured in dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch (ppi), determines its detail and quality. Higher resolution images contain more pixels and therefore appear sharper, especially when enlarged.

Due to their pixelated nature, raster images are best suited for photographic content and complex color gradients. However, they can become blurry or pixelated when scaled up beyond their original resolution. Conversely, vector graphics are ideal for logos, illustrations, and designs that require scalability. When editing raster images, adjustments are made to individual pixels or groups of pixels, directly affecting their color and position within the grid.
