Rappresentata is the feminine singular form of the past participle of the Italian verb rappresentare, and in legal and contractual language it designates the person who is represented by a separate agent or representative. The masculine equivalent is rappresentato, and the plural forms are rappresentate (feminine) and rappresentati (masculine/mixed).

In law, the concept belongs to the broader notion of rappresentanza (representation). The rappresentata is the party for whom a rappresentante (the representative or agent) acts, and whose rights and obligations may be created or bound by acts performed within the scope of the representation. Representation can arise in several ways, including voluntary mandate (procura), or by legal necessity, such as guardianship for minors or for persons with limited capacity.

Two main forms of representation are typically recognized. Voluntary representation is based on a mandate or power of attorney, which authorizes the rappresentante to act on behalf of the rappresentata in contracts, negotiations, or judicial proceedings. Legal representation occurs by operation of law, for example when a minor is represented by a parent or guardian, or when a corporation is represented by its directors or officers. In civil procedures, a procura alle liti (power of attorney to litigate) enables the rappresentante to appear and act for the rappresentata in court.

The relationship is governed by the relevant provisions of the Italian Civil Code, which outline the scope, limits, termination, and fiduciary duties of the rappresentante. The term is frequently used in legal documents to specify the party on whose behalf acts are performed, and it can be translated as “the represented party” or, in corporate contexts, “the principal.”
