Rajavartijat is the Finnish term for border guards, referring to the personnel of the Finnish Border Guard (Rajavartiolaitos). They are responsible for border control and security along Finland’s land and sea borders, as well as at international airports and border crossing points. Their mandate includes preventing illegal entry and smuggling, enforcing entry requirements, and assisting other authorities in matters of public safety and immigration.

Border guards perform maritime border control, including surveillance of territorial waters, search and rescue operations, and port and harbor checks. They also conduct border surveillance using patrol vessels, aircraft, and land-based systems, and are deployed in crisis situations and emergencies. They work in coordination with the coast guard and collaborate with police, customs, and, when necessary, defense forces.

Organization and operations: Rajavartiolaitos is the government agency under the Ministry of the Interior responsible for border security and related tasks. Rajavartijat operate in various units, including border control units, maritime operations, and air operations, and may be deployed for joint operations within Finland and in international contexts.

Training and standards: Rajavartijat receive law enforcement–style training in border-control procedures, use of force, first aid, search and rescue, and intercultural communication. International cooperation: The Finnish Border Guard cooperates with European Union agencies such as Frontex, participates in international missions, and engages in information sharing and joint exercises to enhance border security and humanitarian response.
