Radiácia refers to the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium. It encompasses a wide spectrum of electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays, as well as streams of subatomic particles like alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons.

There are two primary categories of radiation: ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing radiation possesses sufficient energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, a process called ionization. This type of radiation, including X-rays, gamma rays, and alpha and beta particles, can damage living tissues and is a concern in nuclear power and medical imaging. Non-ionizing radiation, such as radio waves, microwaves, and visible light, has lower energy and does not cause ionization. While generally considered less harmful, high intensities of some non-ionizing radiation can still cause effects like heating.

Radiation is a natural phenomenon, with sources including the sun, cosmic rays, and naturally occurring radioactive elements in the Earth's crust. Humans also generate radiation through various technologies, including medical X-rays, CT scans, and nuclear reactors.
