Radiodensiteettiä, or radiodensity, refers to the degree to which a material attenuates or absorbs X-rays. In medical imaging, radiodensity is a crucial factor in visualizing different tissues and structures within the body. Materials with higher radiodensity, meaning they absorb more X-rays, appear whiter or brighter on an X-ray image. Conversely, materials with lower radiodensity, which allow more X-rays to pass through, appear darker.

This difference in radiodensity is due to the atomic composition and density of the material. Denser materials with a higher number of electrons, such as bone and metal, have a greater ability to absorb X-rays, leading to a higher radiodensity. Soft tissues, like muscle and fat, have lower radiodensity and therefore appear in shades of gray. Air, having very low density, has the lowest radiodensity and appears black on X-ray images.

The concept of radiodensity is fundamental to interpreting radiographs and other X-ray-based imaging modalities. Radiologists use the variations in radiodensity to identify abnormalities, such as fractures in bones, foreign objects, or the presence of fluid or air in areas where it should not be. Understanding radiodensity allows for the differentiation of various anatomical structures, making it an indispensable tool in diagnostic imaging. Different types of X-ray contrast agents are also designed to temporarily increase the radiodensity of specific organs or blood vessels, enhancing their visibility.
