Radiaalmootoreid, also known as radial engines, are a type of internal combustion engine where the cylinders are arranged in a circular pattern around a central crankshaft. This configuration is distinct from inline or V-type engines where cylinders are placed in a line or two banks. In a radial engine, the connecting rods of the pistons are attached to a single crankpin, allowing for a compact and powerful design.

The primary advantage of radial engines is their excellent power-to-weight ratio. The arrangement of cylinders allows for effective air cooling, which is particularly beneficial for aircraft engines where airflow is abundant. This robust cooling also contributes to their reliability and durability. The crankshaft is relatively short and stout, making it less prone to bending under stress compared to longer crankshafts in inline engines.

Radial engines were widely used in early aviation, powering many iconic aircraft due to their ability to produce significant horsepower in a compact and air-cooled package. They were also employed in some tanks and other heavy machinery. However, their bulkiness and aerodynamic challenges in later aircraft designs led to their gradual replacement by other engine types, such as turboprop and jet engines, in aviation. Despite this, radial engines remain a significant part of engineering history and are still found in some vintage aircraft and specialized applications.
