Radaripildistamine, often referred to as radar imaging, is a technique used to create visual representations of objects and environments using radar technology. Unlike optical cameras that capture visible light, radar systems emit radio waves and analyze the signals that are reflected back from the target. These reflected signals, known as echoes, contain information about the distance, speed, and reflectivity of the object.

The process typically involves a radar transmitter that sends out pulses of electromagnetic energy and a receiver that detects the returning echoes. By measuring the time it takes for the echoes to return, the radar can determine the distance to the object. The frequency and amplitude of the echoes provide further details about the object's characteristics. Sophisticated signal processing algorithms are then employed to convert this raw data into an image.

Radar imaging is particularly valuable in situations where optical imaging is limited. This includes adverse weather conditions such as fog, rain, or snow, as well as darkness. Its applications are diverse, ranging from weather forecasting, where it is used to visualize precipitation patterns and storm intensity, to navigation, where it helps ships and aircraft detect obstacles and other vessels. In remote sensing, radar is used to map terrain, monitor deforestation, and study ice formations. Military applications include surveillance, target detection, and battlefield mapping. The ability of radar to penetrate certain materials also opens up possibilities in areas like ground-penetrating radar for archaeological surveys or inspecting infrastructure.
