raadiot

Raadiot is the Estonian partitive singular form of raadio, the common word for radio. It is used when the radio is the object of a verb, for example Ma kuulan raadiot, meaning “I am listening to the radio.” The term raadio can refer to both the radio receiver and to radio as a broadcasting medium. In ordinary speech, speakers may discuss programs, stations, or broadcasts in general using raadio, while raadiojaam denotes a specific radio station.

The word raadio is a borrowing from the international term radio, which itself derives from the Latin radius and from early 20th‑century European usage reflecting wireless transmission. Estonian adapted the term to its phonology and grammar, producing raadio and its inflected forms to fit phrases and sentences.

In modern usage, radio remains a pervasive medium for news, music, and talk programming. Digital formats and internet radio have expanded access beyond traditional AM and FM broadcasting, with many Estonian stations offering online streams and mobile apps. Radios and equipment range from portable units to car stereos and home receivers, reflecting ongoing changes in how audiences access audio content.
