Põrnaveeni, also known as the splenic vein, is a crucial blood vessel in the human circulatory system. It is formed by the confluence of several small veins that collect blood from the spleen. The primary function of the põrnaveeni is to drain deoxygenated blood from the spleen and transport it to the portal vein, which then carries this blood to the liver. The spleen is an organ located in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen, playing a vital role in the immune system and in filtering blood.

The põrnaveeni originates within the spleen and travels towards the pancreas. It typically merges with the superior mesenteric vein to form the portal vein. This venous confluence is a significant anatomical landmark. The blood flowing through the põrnaveeni is rich in absorbed nutrients from the digestive system, as well as waste products and aged blood cells filtered by the spleen.

Conditions affecting the põrnaveeni can have serious health implications. Obstruction or narrowing of the põrnaveeni, known as splenic vein thrombosis, can lead to increased pressure within the spleen and a condition called portal hypertension. This can result in the enlargement of the spleen (splenomegaly) and the formation of varices, particularly in the esophagus and stomach, which can bleed profusely. Causes of splenic vein thrombosis include pancreatitis, liver disease, and certain blood clotting disorders. Its anatomical position also makes it susceptible to compression by surrounding organs or tumors.
