The term "põlvkondadevaheline" is derived from the Estonian word "põlvkond," meaning generation. During this time, young Estonians, influenced by the Western trends of the time, began to adopt non-conformist attitudes and engage in artistic, literary, and musical pursuits that contradicted the official Soviet ideology. Many of these young artists and intellectuals were students at Tartu University, who, despite official Soviet restrictions, started to organize alternative cultural and literary movements.

These movements were often underground and inherently dissident, as they sought to express Estonian identity and create a sense of unity among young people living within a restrictive cultural environment. The theoretical and philosophical ideas of the Western world, especially the works of Wilhelm Dilthey, Karl Mannheim, and others, also played an influential role in shaping the intellectual culture of this period.

Põlvkondadevaheline had significant effects on Estonian culture and intellectual discourse. During this time, Estonian literature embarked on new paths, even while always bearing the shadow of the harmful arts censorship that prevailed in Soviet Estonia. As a result, Estonian theoretical enriching the surrounding political climates affected how people responded to socially accepted views on society and to relationships.
