Põhiolek is an Estonian term that translates to "ground state" or "basic state." In various contexts, it refers to the fundamental, most stable, or initial condition of a system.

In physics, particularly in quantum mechanics, põhiolek describes the lowest possible energy state of a quantum system. An atom or molecule in its põhiolek is not actively absorbing or emitting energy in discrete packets. Transitions from the põhiolek to higher energy states, known as excited states, occur when the system absorbs energy. Conversely, a system in an excited state will eventually transition back to the põhiolek, releasing the excess energy as photons.

In chemistry, põhiolek can refer to the most stable arrangement of atoms in a molecule under standard conditions. This is often the state where chemical bonds are optimized for energy.

More broadly, põhiolek can be applied to describe the baseline or normal condition of non-physical systems. For example, in economics, it might refer to a standard or recessionary state of an economy before intervention.
