Pénzmosás is the Hungarian term for money laundering. The process typically involves three stages: placement, layering, and integration.

Placement involves introducing the illicit funds into the financial system, often through small, seemingly legitimate transactions or by depositing cash into bank accounts. Layering is the more complex stage, where multiple financial transactions are conducted to obscure the audit trail and the original source of the funds. This can include transferring money between different accounts, countries, or financial instruments. Finally, integration is the stage where the laundered money is returned to the criminal, appearing as legitimate income or assets, allowing them to use it without suspicion.

Anti-money laundering (AML) regulations and efforts are in place globally to combat this crime. These include Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures, suspicious transaction reporting, and international cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
