Päättelylajiendeduktio, often simply referred to as deduction, is a logical process where a conclusion is based on the concordance of multiple premises that are generally assumed to be true. It is a method of reasoning that starts with a general statement or hypothesis and examines the possibilities to reach a specific, logical conclusion. If all the premises are true and the reasoning is valid, then the conclusion must also be true. This is a fundamental aspect of formal logic and scientific inquiry.

A classic example of deductive reasoning is the syllogism: "All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal." Here, the first two statements are premises, and the conclusion logically follows from them. Deductive reasoning moves from the general to the specific. It is used extensively in mathematics, where theorems are proven based on axioms and previously established theorems. In everyday life, we use deduction implicitly when we make predictions based on established rules or patterns. The strength of deductive reasoning lies in its certainty; if the premises are sound, the conclusion is guaranteed. It is distinct from inductive reasoning, which moves from specific observations to broader generalizations.
