Päällekkäisyysperiaate, often translated as the superposition principle, is a fundamental concept in physics and mathematics. It states that for linear systems, the net response caused by two or more stimuli is the sum of the responses that would have been caused by each stimulus individually. In simpler terms, if you have multiple causes acting on a system, the total effect is simply the sum of the effects of each cause acting alone.

In classical mechanics, for example, if multiple forces act on an object, the resulting acceleration is the vector sum of the accelerations that each force would produce independently. Similarly, in electromagnetism, the electric field produced by several charges is the vector sum of the electric fields produced by each charge.

In quantum mechanics, the principle of superposition is even more profound. A quantum system can exist in a combination of multiple states simultaneously until a measurement is made. The probability of finding the system in a particular state is related to the amplitudes of each component state in the superposition. The mathematical formulation of the principle typically involves linear equations, as it applies to systems described by linear operators. The breakdown of the principle can occur in non-linear systems, where the interaction between stimuli can alter the individual responses.
