Päikesespektrit refer to the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun. This spectrum spans a wide range, from radio waves to gamma rays, but is most intensely concentrated in the visible light portion. When sunlight passes through a prism or is analyzed by a spectrograph, it splits into its constituent colors, forming a rainbow-like band. This visible spectrum comprises the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, ordered by their wavelengths.

Beyond visible light, the Sun also emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is responsible for sunburn and can have other biological effects. On the longer wavelength side, the Sun produces infrared (IR) radiation, which we perceive as heat. The Sun's spectrum is not perfectly continuous; it contains dark lines known as Fraunhofer lines. These lines occur where specific wavelengths of light have been absorbed by elements in the Sun's cooler outer atmosphere. Studying these absorption lines allows scientists to determine the chemical composition of the Sun and its temperature. The Sun's spectral output is crucial for life on Earth, providing the energy for photosynthesis and driving weather patterns.
